I made my circles to be face scrubbies, so cotton yarn was the best for that. If you plan on using them for something else ( coasters, joining them to make another project, etc. ), they need not be cotton, but textured yarns wont show the ribbing as well. Also keep in mind how changing hooks will affect the size and density of your stitches and see what turns out the best.

sc - single crochet
sl st - slip stitch
fpdc - front post double crochet
dc - double crochet
Pattern:
Row 1 magic ring, 8 sc, sl st into 1st sc (8)
Row 2 ch 2 [fpdc, dc into next st] 8 times, sl st into 1st dc (16)
Row 3 ch 2 [fpdc, dc into next st] 16 times, sl st into 1st dc (32)
Row 4 sc in same st as sl st and in each st in round, sl st into 1st sc, fasten off and weave in ends (33)
